Tips - Multiple Headers
Here's how to create page numbers for documents that vary from section to
section, i.e. Section 1 - Page 1, Section 2 - Page 1, Section 3 - Page 1, etc.
Create a floating header or footer for each section of the document. The
floating header or footer for any section should be inserted on the first line
of the page on which you want that header of footer to display and print. In
the header or footer insert a page number (Page/Page Number). Select your
numbering style, page to start on, number to start with, and then type in the
text you want before the page number in the blank provided in the dialogue box.
(i.e. Section 1 - Page 1). Click OK. Repeat for each section of the document.
Tips - Calendar Style
Since it's the beginning of the month, I hope this tip will be useful. Ami Pro
has a style sheet which "generates" a calendar. Here's how: Create a new file
with the style sheet ~CALNDR.STY, with contents. On your screen, you will see a
table that resembles a calendar. Position your cursor in the top cell, and
your style (lower left corner of your screen) will change to Title. Type the
name of the month here. The days of the week are already typed in. You will
note that the dates are (more then likely) not correct. Simple to fix! The date
cells have formulas in them to recalculate the dates. Shade and delete the
unneeded dates from the first few cells of the calendar (and at the end, if
necessary) to customize your calendar. BTW, if you should get confused, lost or
otherwise sidetracked, and forget these directions, the style sheet comes with
"yellow sticky notes" with directions in them. Just double click on the yellow
sticky, and read on.
Tips - Header/Footers
When writing a long document, you may have put in several floating headers or
footers to separate sections. (See Tips on Floating Header/Footers) If you
have your marks turned off, how do you know where the header or footer is
marked to remove it, if necessary? Simple! Using Tools/GoTo select Next Item,
and find in the scroll box the entry for Floating Header/Footer. Click on Go
To. Now to remove the Floating Header/Footer, click Page/Floating
Header/Footer, select Remove, and select Header or Footer. After you click OK,
the Header or Footer is gone. Your previous Header or Footer will take effect.
Tips - Marks
Ever wonder what marks you put into your document, and more importantly, where?
You can display your marks when you go to View/Display Preferences... and
select Marks. For a list of what the marks will look like in your document,
refer to the file in LIB2 called MARKS12.ZIP. This is an Ami Pro file. Many
marks, such as the Page Layout, Page Break, and Floating Header/Footer marks
require that you position your cursor on the mark itself to remove it.
Displaying your marks makes it easier to do this!
Tips - Merge
With the Holidays just around the corner, many of you will be sending out
Christmas/Chanukah cards to your friends, family and business associates. If
your address list is not yet created, you can create one in Ami Pro. There is
even a macro included in Ami Pro to help you enter all those names and
addresses. But many of you already have an address list in one of the many
database formats. You will be happy to know that you can use your database to
print out labels or envelopes in Ami Pro!
Your database program will probably be able to get your address list into one
of the supported formats, if it is not in such a format already. Once you have
the address list, create a description file in Ami Pro. On the first line of
the file, type in the type of your database file. You may type: fixed, comma,
dif, 1-2-3, dBase, Excel or SuperCalc. The remainder of the description file
will contain the field names corresponding to the data in the external database
file and the field lengths, if necessary. Each field name should be entered on
a new line (new paragraph).
Next, create the standard document. This is the label, or envelope that
contains the field names in the position you want them to print.
The final step is to merge the records and print the actual labels or
envelopes. Use File/Merge to do this.
